An Aided Congestion Avoidance Mechanism for TCP Vegas

چکیده
TCP Vegas detects network congestion in the early stage and successfully prevents periodic packet loss that usually occurs in TCP Reno. It has been demonstrated that TCP Vegas achieves much higher performance than TCP Reno in many aspects. However, TCP Vegas cannot prevent unnecessary throughput degradation when congestion occurs in the backward path, it passes through multiple congested links, or it reroutes through a path with longer round-trip time (RTT). In this paper, we propose an aided congestion avoidance mechanism for TCP Vegas, called Aid-Vegas, which uses the relative one-way delay of each packet along the forward path to distinguish whether congestion occurs or not. Through the results of simulation, we demonstrate that Aid-Vegas can solve the problems of rerouting and backward congestion, enhance the fairness among the competitive connections, and improve the throughput when multiple congested links are encountered.

Transmission control protocol (TCP) Vegas detects network congestion in the early stage and successfully prevents periodic packet loss that usually occurs in TCP Reno. It has been demonstrated that TCP Vegas outperforms TCP Reno in many aspects. However, TCP Vegas suffers several problems that inhere in its congestion avoidance mechanism, these include issues of rerouting, persistent congestion...
متن کاملTCP Vegas Revisited
The innovative techniques of TCP Vegas have been the subject of much debate in recent years. Several studies have reported that TCP Vegas provides better performance than TCP Reno. However, the question which of the new techniques are responsible for the impressive performance gains remains unanswered so far. This paper presents a detailed performance evaluation of TCP Vegas. By decomposing TCP...

A window-based flow control mechanism is a sort of feedback-based congestion control mechanisms, and has been widely used in TCP/IP networks. Recently proposed TCP Vegas is another version of the TCP mechanism and has potential to achieve much better performance than current TCP Tahoe and Reno. In this paper, we focus on a window-based flow control mechanism based on a congestion avoidance mech...
متن کاملVEGAS RB+: An Optimized Version of TCP VEGAS
TCP Vegas is a well-known delay-based congestion control mechanism. A strategy called Additive Increase/Multiplicative Decrease regulates the number of packets that are sent at one time. When congestion occurs the packets start to drop (multiplicative decrease). TCP's four intertwined congestion control algorithms are: Slow Start, Congestion Avoidance, Fast retransmit, and Fast recovery. In thi...
